Autumn Apprentice at Flower Farm in Philadelphia

Love ‘n Fresh Flowers is looking for an energetic and detail-oriented individual to fill an Autumn Apprenticeship at our flower farm during the busy late summer and autumn seasons. This apprenticeship is a great opportunity for an individual passionate about getting involved in urban farming, regenerative farming, and/or flower farming. This opportunity, however, is not for the faint of heart!  The work days will be long and tiring. It’s often very hot still at our farm through late September. A certain level of existing fitness and toughness is necessary to jump into the season at this point. If you feel like working 8 hours in 90 degree heat several days in a row would be beyond your capacity, then this apprenticeship is not the right fit for you. If you are not comfortable with getting really dirty, sweaty, and bug-bitten, also not the right fit for you!

The apprentice will learn about and assist with the following:

– Harvesting and processing cut flowers, including proper stage of harvest and cutting efficiently
– Managing weeds
– Clearing planting beds and preparing them for winter cover cropping
– Planting bulbs and corms, including tulips, ranunculus, and anemones
– Sowing seeds and transplanting seedlings for spring blooms
– Building low tunnels for protecting tender crops over the winter
– Spreading mulch, compost, and other soil ammendments
– Mowing with a push mower to maintain farm aisles
– Cleaning tools, buckets, etc

It may also include:
– Creating bud vases for weddings
– Setting up weddings at various venues in the Philadelphia region
– Cleaning and re-shelving rentals after weddings

The Love ‘n Fresh Flowers farm is located in the Roxborough neighborhood (zip 19128) of Philadelphia.  Our farm currently has 3+ acres in intensive production and we will be opening up new ground for increased production this fall.  Our farm is Certified Naturally Grown and dedicated to using only sustainable practices in keeping with regenerative agriculture principles.  This apprenticeship is an excellent opportunity to learn all about those aspects of farming.

Applicant must be able to work 3 days a week, Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.  Must be willing to work in all types of weather. Must be able to lift 50 pounds repeatedly in one day if necessary.  Access to reliable transportation is desirable since the farm is not located near any SEPTA stops.

The apprenticeship begins August 24th and continues until a week after the first hard frost, likely late October.

To apply, please send a cover letter and resume to info@lovenfreshflowers.com and include “Autumn Apprenticeship” in the subject line.  No phone calls please.

Indigenous, black and and people of all colors are warmly encouraged to apply!
