Flower Workshop Schedule
We have two unique, on-farm workshop formats. For those interested in learning the basics of floral design while exploring the rows of flowers at our farm and relaxing in a wide open space, our stand-alone Floral FUNdamentals Workshops are just the ticket and are outlined below. For those looking to become floral professionals, we offer a more intensive extended curriculum through our Floral Cohort. For farmer-florists around the globe, you may wish to explore some of our virtual learning resources here.

All of Love ‘n Fresh Flowers hands-on learning experiences focus on floral design techniques that effortlessly showcase locally and sustainably grown elements, including those snipped right out of your home garden. Students are encouraged to explore their own style of design within the framework of guidelines demonstrated in these hands-on floral design workshops and to ask questions about planting a flower garden of their own.
Easy registration for workshops is available in our online shop. Registration for individual workshops does not open until 30 days before the class so be sure to check back if you don’t see the workshop you want to attend in the online shop yet. Classes typically cost $175-$250, depending on the topic and materials being used. Please read each class description carefully before registering. All classes listed here in our flower workshop schedule are held at our flower farm in the Roxborough neighborhood of Philadelphia (zip code 19128). Upon registration, students will receive detailed information on how to find the farm.
Please note: registration for each Floral Fundamentals Workshop opens one month before the workshop date.
For example, if the workshop date is September 30th, the registration for that workshop will open August 30th, usually around noon.

I attended a hands-on workshop in Jennie’s spacious barn, which functions very well as classroom space. The farm itself is gorgeous, bursting forth with exuberant plant life and pollinators. Jennie broke down a fairly tricky technique into a series of understandable steps and left me inspired to continue to work on my arranging skills armed with all the new knowledge she lent based on her many years of professional experience. Our workshops typically sell out quickly so please scan the full flower workshop schedule below and mark your calendars with a reminder for the day registration opens so you’ll be sure to get a spot.
Light seasonal refreshments are provided during workshops.
Class size is typically limited to 10-12 people at max unless stated otherwise; five students must be signed up for a class to run.
Students must be 14 years or older to participate. We use sharp tools that are not appropriate for younger children.
No refunds or transfers are offered for students who can not make it after registering.
In case of severe weather, the class may be rescheduled or canceled. Students will be notified in advance as much as possible and refunds will be issued as needed if Love ‘n Fresh Flowers chooses to cancel a class.

Spring is here! Say hello! Who doesn’t love hellebores? These darlings of early spring give every gardener hope for the season ahead. Come learn how to grow and properly harvest these long-lasting beauties. Great for shade gardens and those gardens pestered by deer. During this class, we’ll also meet several unique spring bulbs like muscari, heirloom narcissus, fancy tulips, and giant snowdrops. Once we’ve taken a close look at how they all grow at the farm, we’ll return to the design studio to create a whimsical and airy early spring centerpiece to take home. Students will also take home hellebore seedlings to put in their own garden or a pot on their patio.

A RIOT OF RANUNCULUS FOREVER: Growing, Harvesting and Drying

Who doesn’t just adore ranunculus?? All those ruffled petals!! And did you know they are sweetly fragrant when just picked at our farm?! Come immerse yourself in these sensual blooms during this workshop dedicated to early Spring’s leading lady. First you’ll be invited into our greenhouse where the ranunculus are blooming to tour the verdant space and learn about all the flowers growing there. You’ll then be able to cut your own ranunculus and a handful of other spring blooms to take back into the design studio for the second half of the class. In the studio, you’ll learn how to dry the blooms you harvested using silica gel and you’ll watch a demo of how to use those dried blooms to make everlasting floral artwork for your home. Students will be given the all materials needed for drying their blooms to take home with them.

POPPIES & HEIRLOOM NARCISSUS

The delicate blooms of Icelandic poppies remind one of ruffled crepe paper. It’s hard to believe they are real! In this workshop, we’ll pair them with fragrant heirloom narcissus for charming early spring arrangements. We’ll talk about growing these two spring ephemerals and the varieties we recommend. A great class for both flowers lovers and flower farmers.

TIP TOE THROUGH THE TULIPS

Come enjoy the many varieties of specialty tulips we grow at our farm. Learn how to harvest them for the longest vase life, how to store them for weeks out of water to enjoy later in the spring, and where to order bulbs for yourself to plant for next year. We’ll pair these ubiquitous spring blooms with other early spring blooms such as hellebores, bleeding hearts, muscari, and narcissus for a charming spring compote design.

SPILLING OVER SPRING CENTERPIECES

The perfect Mother’s Day gift!!! This popular workshop sells out every year so be sure to grab your spot early! Either bring Mom with you or come make a beautiful arrangement to take to her. Start class off with a walk through the flower fields and growing houses to learn about the colorful and diverse varieties of spring blooms that are grown at Love ‘n Fresh Flowers. Harvest your favorites to use as you design your own lush and overflowing spring centerpiece right where they were grown! A beautiful, hand-crafted vase will be provided for each student and is yours to keep. Two sessions to choose from!

SPIKE SEASON

Mid May at the farm is what’s known as “spike season”… all the really fun linear flowers are in full bloom. Campanula, snapdragons, baptisia, fritillaria, foxglove, iris, veronica and more. It’s a great opportunity to explore more architectural styles of floral design. So if you like strong clean lines, come enjoy spike season with us! There will also be lots of other seasonal flowers too, of course, including hopefully the first peonies of the season!

THE ART OF HAND-TIED BOUQUETS

There’s magic in making a bouquet in your hand and then, with sweeping flare, putting it in a vase for a perfect arrangement! Come learn the art of crafting a European-style spiral hand-tied bouquet with the bounty from our farm. This technique is timeless and one that we use at Love ‘n Fresh to create our gorgeous, textural, relaxed bridal bouquets. We also use this technique to make many of our wedding centerpieces. But you don’t have to have a wedding on your calendar to enjoy mastering hand-tied bouquets. This technique is also very “handy” to know if you’re making a bouquet to take to a friend in the hospital or to take a oh-ah-worthy hostess gift to the next party. After a quick walk around the farm to gather some extra special blooms, Jennie will lead students through a detailed demonstration. Students will then craft their own bouquets and can choose to finish them with wide satin ribbons and tissue wrap or place them in cylinder vase for an easy-breezy arrangement to take home.

SWEET EARLY SUMMER CENTERPIECES

As the Summer Solstice sun crosses the sky on the longest days of the year, the farm is filled with all sorts of sweet little blooms that that welcome early summer at the farm. Queen Anne’s lace, feverfew, black-eyed susans, snapdragons, strawflowers, yarrow, agrostemma, phlox, satin flower, and more will inspire whimsical, color-filled bouquets that match the footloose feel of the summer season. Learn how to craft a sweet little “earthy elegant” centerpiece that is the signature look at Love ‘n Fresh Flowers using sustainable techniques. SUMMER SOLSTICE EVERLASTING MEADOW WINDOW PANE

Enjoy the long lazy twilight of early summer, collecting bits of grasses, wildflowers, seed pods, and ferns to weave into everlasting dried botanical art that can be hung across your window to capture the light. We will work together the fashion a frame out of willow and wire and then thread the delicate stems of the fresh flowers and other bits you gather from the farm through the frame. You’ll receive instructions for how to properly dry and care for your finished piece so it will look lovely for a long time to come.

SUMMER FIELD DAY

Come learn about how our farm works, from the soil up! On a very extensive farm tour, we’ll discuss several strategies for deeply sustainable growing practices that include managing weeds without chemicals; making natural fertilizers and biology boosters on the farm; building habitat to battle pests naturally, sowing and terminating summer cover crops, and learning to observe and work with nature rather than trying to wrangle her into submission. Meet like-minded growers who can help support you on your journey to being a better steward of the earth. Get away from your own farm to gain perspective!

In this workshop, you’ll have plenty of time to play with our dahlias, cosmos, lisianthus, grasses, rusty-hued foliages, herbs, and much more! Take lots of photos in the soft golden light. Learn how to incorporate seasonal fruits and pods into your designs. A beautiful large earthen bowl will be provided for each student to use and is yours to keep. Walk long rows of blooms at the farm and harvest as your heart desires. Learn how to craft a loose, lush, “earthy elegant” arrangement that is the signature look at Love ‘n Fresh Flowers. Take home a paper-wrapped bundle of extra blooms to practice some more!

TATAKI ZOME TOTES: NATURAL PLANT DYING

Tataki Zome is the Japanese art of transferring natural pigments from fresh flowers and leaves onto fabric by simply hammering them onto the surface. It’s also known as flower pounding, leaf bashing and sometimes referred to as Hapa Zome. Join us to stroll the fields to gather flowers and greenery to transfer on to canvas totes. A great stress reliever!

MAKING A STATEMENT WITH LARGE URN ARRANGEMENTS

Learn to make a 3 foot tall focal arrangement in a gold urn, using the farm’s large autumn branches and dinnerplate dahlias. This is a great class for those students who have attended several other classes at our farm who are looking to up their game. Also a great class for floral professionals that would like to learn how to make larger pieces without foam and just generally get inspired by seasonal branches and blooms from our farm. This class does not include a farm tour.

OCTOBER CENTERPIECES

The long low golden rays of the autumn sun will touch on the very last of our flowers to bloom before frost. The cold nights will have turned the jewel-tones of the dahlias into something you can’t quite believe, proving Mother Nature is indeed a sorceress. The meadow will be full of dying grasses and seed pods to forage. The swan song of a field about to give up the last of its spirit for the season is intensely beautiful and somehow unexpectedly calming. Find your center in this wild space before the winter sets in. A unique moody vessel will be provided for each student to use and is yours to keep. Walk long rows of blooms at the farm and harvest as your heart desires. Learn how to craft a lush dramatic arrangement full of wildness.

Flower Workshops at Love ‘n Fresh Flowers in Philadelphia
FOLIAGE FIRST
Date: Thursday, OCTOBER 17, 2024

Flowers usually take center stage when it comes to centerpieces. But around Love ‘n Fresh Flowers, we covet and grow heaps of really interesting foliage that make our bouquets stand out. During this autumn afternoon class, we’ll explore the idea of creating a centerpiece focused on foliage first, with perhaps just a few accent blooms. Ninebark, smokebush, snowberry, spirea, viburnum, mountain mint, eucalyptus, dusty miller, fennel fronds, ferns, heuchera, and so much more will be at students’ disposal. We’ll start class as we always do, with a walk around the farm, but this time with a focus on the plants that produce the best cut foliage for our work. Then we’ll return to the spacious barn and get to work on creating an ample, wild, textural, foliage-inspired design in a large bowl. If you’re a floral designer looking to crack a creative rut, this class could really help you step out of your flower-focused comfort zone and embrace new materials. If you’re a farmer florist, this class will definitely expose you to lots of new cultivars for cut foliage (can you really ever have enough??). And if you’re new to floral design, this class will be super relaxed and fun while still teaching you all the basics of creating a beautiful, lush centerpiece.

SEASON FINALE WITH HEIRLOOM MUMS

Heirloom mums will take center stage in this workshop where you’ll craft your own bountiful arrangement from the last harvest of the season. Work in mini pumpkins, ornamental corn, sticks, grasses, fall leaves and more for a striking conversation piece on your holiday table. Elements used in this design will last well through Thanksgiving if cared for properly.

FALL FIELD DAY

Meet like-minded growers who can help support you on your journey to being a better steward of the earth.
