Here at Love ‘n Fresh Flowers, we love all weddings, but we particularly love weddings that are more intimate, are set in a historic venue, feature a beautiful garden, are for a more mature couple, or are celebrating a second marriage.  Liz and David’s autumn wedding at the Highlands Mansion and Gardens in featured not just one but all of those elements!

Liz is an artist and a gardener so the beautiful historic gardens at the Highlands felt like a natural fit for her and David to celebrate their wedding.  While the mansion is still stunning, its glory is a bit faded so Liz wanted to bring lots of color to the party to liven things up a bit.  The resulting palette of deep wine pink, blue, blush, coral, peach, green and touches of yellow was a bit unconventional for an October fete but it worked perfectly in the space at the Highlands Mansion and Gardens.

The Bouquets

Liz wore an exquisite sage green beaded gown.  Her bridesmaids wore mismatched gowns in navy, wine, and sage green.  The bouquets were inspired by these dress colors.  Liz’s bouquet was full of texture and all the unique elements our farm had to offer, including dahlias, zinnias, lisianthus, garden roses, caryopteris, sea oats, eucalyptus, hydrangea, fennel, and mountain mint.  The bridesmaid bouquets featured a large deep wine dahlia as the focal surrounded by several smaller peach dahlias and lots of textural greens.

The Ceremony

Guests were greeted at the front door of the mansion with an abundance of flowers in several large-scale statement urns.  They were then ushered through the house out to the veranda for a welcome beverage before being seated in the garden for the ceremony.  The ceremony was decorated by two lush, colorful, overflowing floral urns set on top of wooden pedestals in front of the central fountain.  A bluegrass trio, Noggin Hill, played live acoustic music throughout the ceremony and reception.  We loved seeing these talented musicians again — they play for our annual Summer Solstice Soiree at our farm.

Cocktail Hour

After Liz and David said “I Do”, they and their guests enjoyed a cocktail hour scattered across the formal gardens and inside the downstairs of the house.  Guests got the chance to explore the rambling garden space, including the old glass greenhouse and the many unique garden gates.

The Reception

Dinner was served under a tent off the side of the house.  The tables featured a trio of floral designs in unique vessels, including navy blue ceramic bowls, blue delftware vases, and apothecary bottles.   The buffet tables featured larger floral designs in oversized bottles.  The day was a bit overcast and the bright colors of the centerpieces really made all the difference in the tented space.  So glad Liz and David were not afraid to be bold with their color choices!  Tracey and the gang at Bacchus Catering did a superb job with the food!

Dancing

The evening wrapped up with dancing inside the house in the main hall.   We decorated the delicious sponge cake provided by the Night Kitchen Bakery with an abundance of autumn goodies, including dahlias, wild grapes, and persimmons from our farm.
