The sun is out, the air is warm, we’re already working on our farmer’s tans, and the weeds are growing. . . well, like weeds! We’re a two-woman farm crew at the moment and could use a little help! When one of our couples getting married this year told us they met at a “weed dating” event at another Philadelphia urban farm, it seemed like a match made in heaven for Love ‘n Fresh Flowers!
So what is Weed Dating? It’s a spin-off of that now-faded trend, Speed Dating. No, “weed” does not refer to cannabis. You might want to save that for the second date. Haha! Instead, at Weed Dating you hunker down along our rows at the farm to pull up unwanted plants, working across from a cute boy or girl who is interested in doing the same. It attracts the outdoorsy type, the urban farming type, the earth-loving type, the beat-of-their-own-drum type, the food-justice type, the craftsman-type, the volunteerism-type, and the hell-no-I-don’t-do-online-dating-but-really-don’t-know-how-to-meet-new-people-otherwise type. All are welcome (even if you don’t fit into one of the aforementioned types)! The only requirement is that you be SINGLE! Sorry, no open-relationship types. Any orientation is welcome, and we’ll have little ribbons to pin on to help everyone know who they should be winking at while they yank those weeds.
Love ‘n Fresh Flowers is the official host of this first round of weed dating, but we’re partnering with our buddies at Teens4Good at the farm we share with them so you’ll get a look at both flower and vegetable production in an urban farm setting. We will weed for about 90 minutes and then kick back for a few beverages and hopefully a phone number or Instagram handle exchange with some cuties.
A few non-weeding tasks may also be available if you’re not eager to get on your knees (read that however you would like. . .). If you happen to have a chainsaw and are handy using it, please bring it along, and I promise you’ll get my number at least! 😉
Bring a friend, but don’t fret if you come alone. We’ll make sure you feel like one of the (wild and wacky) crew here at the farm. The real dream for us is that someday we get to do the wedding flowers for a couple who met at one of our Weed Dating adventures. We’re sentimental saps like that. Oh yeah, and we’re hoping to do this multiple times this summer so if you’re occupado for this first round, stay tuned for more.
