Spring can’t seem to make up its mind to come around here. Last night the mercury fell below 30F again. I’m frankly a bit fed up. Even though I’ve been growing all through the winter in the hoophouse and greenhouse, I’m itching to get going with spring planting. So are the thousands of transplants fast outgrowing their confined home in the greenhouse.
So, today I got on the tractor and broke ground. It’s always a wonderful feeling, climbing atop the tractor again for the first time each spring. You know things are about to get good.
The real work is beginning, and things will only get greener from here. The soil, despite the cold and recent rain showers, was lovely to work with the tiller, especially after we added a fresh batch of compost and some organic fertilizers. Freshly tilled earth is such a beautiful sight, isn’t it?
And I’m so glad to have help again! Bench returned to the farm this week for his third season with me. He’s the speck in the photo, walking towards the camera from the other end of the field. It’s so nice to not be talking just to myself and the wind anymore.
