Forgive the lack of pictures for this post. It was sleeting while I was trying to shoot and shortly after turned to snow! Mid-November and winter is already here. These are the very last of the dahlias. The hoop house froze earlier this week. I found a lot of peace in clearing it out, making way for the spring plantings. Not that one could ever truly tire of a dahlia, but it was a long, lovely season for them this autumn and I’m ready to move on to a new palette of blooms.

The only flowers left now are the antique mums, which are the true champions of November. We have had the best harvest to date in our four years of growing them. I’ve really honed in on the varieties that I like for design work and that also hold up well to the rough weather this time of the year. We have harvested them all at this point, even if they weren’t quite fully open, and have them stored in the cooler where they will hold well until Thanksgiving orders are filled.

The field is strangely void of all color now, like a sepia photo without any filter. Cleansing and haunting all at once. Rest for the weary is on the horizon. But not before we build another hoop house and get all the anemones and ranunculus planted. Onward, march!
