It was sunny and a balmy 43 degrees this afternoon here in Philadelphia. I spent a full nine hours in the fields today.
In my mind, that makes it the first day of spring; the first day of a new growing season.
I’m sure there’ll be another cold snap or two, but the fields are decidedly ready to get blooming again. The hoop house is full of cheerful anemone faces. The ranunculus in both the hoop house and the low tunnels are looking lush and showing adorable fat buds. The tulips and daffodils are both pushing up through the ground. The sweet peas are forming their cute curly-cues, readying to make their ascent up the trellis. There were earth worms and robins aplenty all over. The seedlings in the greenhouse were literally growing before my eyes with the warm full sun bathing them.
And those aren’t the only things growing rapidly. My to-do list gets longer every day, filling up the ever lengthening hours of daylight. But that’s okay. Nothing makes me happier than dirt under my nails and the sun on my face.
